Coconut Oil Pulling & Why You Should Do It

What is coconut oil pulling?

Coconut oil pulling is primarily a Ayurvedic medicine done to detoxify your mouth by literally pulling bacteria and toxins from swishing a tablespoon of oil around for about 10 to 20 minutes. This detoxifying method is not new, like most things that become a trend in the U.S., but oil pulling has been used traditionally for centuries by many cultures in different regions of the world. Toothbrushes didn’t become a common tool is our households until the 1930’s. To keep teeth from rotting, some of our ancestors did oil pulling, used chew sticks to clean their teeth, and ate real food unlike our sugary and over-processed foods we eat today.

What does coconut oil pulling taste like?

Nothing. I used to be creeped out by the idea of putting a goop of coconut oil in my mouth until I had the guts to try it. Surprisingly, there wasn’t much of a taste and it was very light. So don’t be intimidated by the idea of cleaning your mouth with coconut oil.

How to pull coconut oil?

Step 1: Coconut oil pulling works best first thing in the morning  before you eat or drink.

Step 2: Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth and gently swish it around for about 10 to 20 minutes. Swishing too aggressively can make your jaw sore or tired. It may sound like a long time but it goes by fast, especially if you’re doing things around the house while swishing, checking email, playing Candy Crush or whatever. 🙂

Step 3: Spit our the coconut oil into the trash. Coconut oil solidifies in cooler temperatures and you don’t want to clog up your drain with it over time.

Step 4: Finally, brush your teeth as normal and feel good about yourself.

Repeat about 3 to 4 times a week for a consistent detox, if desired.
